That idea has shaped The Free Spirits Company since its founding in 2019. Rather than asking consumers to abandon cocktails altogether, the California-based company set out to recreate the experience of classic spirits while giving drinkers complete control over how much alcohol ends up in the glass. The result is a portfolio of non-alcoholic spirit alternatives designed not as substitutes, but as cocktail ingredients in their own right.
The philosophy is captured in the company's slogan: "Drink More Cocktails. Just Less Alcohol."
It is a subtle distinction, but an important one.
Free Spirits does not position itself as an abstinence brand. Instead, it speaks to consumers embracing moderation, whether that means alcohol-free serves, lower-proof cocktails, or alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks over the course of an evening. Rather than replacing cocktail culture, the company aims to expand it. Its products can be used as one-to-one replacements for traditional spirits or blended with conventional spirits to create lower-ABV cocktails without sacrificing flavour or structure.

According to Free Spirits, each expression begins by analysing the ingredients, aromas, and flavour interactions that define a traditional spirit. Botanicals and natural ingredients, including American white oak, European juniper, and Mexican blue agave, are distilled individually before being reconstructed into alcohol-free expressions intended to preserve the complexity and character expected from classic cocktail spirits. The company also incorporates its proprietary ReBel™ blend of B vitamins into the products, reflecting its belief that a modern cocktail can offer more than flavour alone.
The range now spans several of the world's most popular cocktail categories, including bourbon, gin, tequila, aperitivo, vermouth, and ready-to-drink non-alcoholic cocktails. Each has been developed with the needs of bartenders and home mixologists in mind, aiming to deliver body, aromatics, and balance that remain intact when mixed with citrus, bitters, syrups, and other cocktail ingredients.
Consumer demand for alcohol-free and lower-alcohol options has accelerated in recent years, driven by changing drinking habits, wellness trends, and the growing popularity of mindful consumption. Free Spirits has positioned itself at the intersection of those movements, focusing not on what has been removed from the glass but on preserving the rituals and social experiences that make cocktails enjoyable.
Founded in Mill Valley, California, Free Spirits has expanded rapidly through both e-commerce and retail distribution. Today, its products are available through major national retailers including Total Wine & More, Safeway, BevMo!, Binny's Beverage Depot, Hy-Vee, and Meijer, alongside hundreds of independent bottle shops, bars, restaurants, and hospitality venues across the United States.
Free Spirits states that its portfolio has earned more than 80 medals and awards across international competitions. The company has also been recognised on the Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest-growing private companies, highlighting the rapid expansion of both the business and the broader alcohol-free category.
At the 2024 USA Spirits Ratings, Free Spirits earned four Silver Medals and three Bronze Medals across its portfolio. The Free Spirits Margarita received 88 points, with judges noting Mild melon and lime on the nose with a lingering heat, bright citrus notes of lemon and grapefruit on the palate, and a refreshing, subtly mineral finish. The Kentucky Mule, The Spirit of Bourbon, and The Spirit of Tequila also received Silver Medals, highlighting the consistency of the range across multiple flavour profiles.

Among its accolades are Gold Medals at the 2024 Bartender Spirits Awards for several expressions within its range. These awards are particularly significant because they acknowledge products judged not simply against other alcohol-free alternatives, but on their ability to deliver flavour, balance, and usability within contemporary cocktail culture.

One of the longstanding challenges of alcohol-free spirits has been maintaining structure and complexity once mixed. Free Spirits was developed specifically to address that problem. By recreating the botanical layers, oak influence, and aromatic intensity associated with traditional spirits, the products are designed to hold their own in classic cocktails rather than disappear behind fruit juice or mixers.
While many alcohol-free brands focus on standalone sipping experiences, Free Spirits continues to champion the bartender and the cocktail menu. Whether building an alcohol-free Negroni, a lower-proof Margarita, or a zero-proof Old Fashioned, the objective remains the same: preserve the ritual, the craftsmanship, and the enjoyment of the drink itself.
As the no- and low-alcohol category continues to evolve, brands increasingly face the challenge of moving beyond novelty and establishing genuine credibility behind the bar.
Free Spirits has approached that challenge by focusing on what made cocktails popular in the first place. The company is not asking consumers to give something up. It is giving them more ways to enjoy the drinks they already love.
In a category defined by innovation, that may prove to be one of the simplest and most enduring ideas of all.
