The USA Spirits Ratings has quickly become a benchmark for evaluating spirits that excel in quality, value, and packaging. Each year, the judging panel comprises the leading trade buyers of national, regional, and independent retailers. Their insights offer a unique perspective on what makes a spirit truly stand out in today’s competitive market.
The USA Spirits Ratings competition is more than just a showcase of the finest spirits—it's an opportunity for industry professionals to connect, discover, and celebrate innovation in the world of spirits. Here’s what this year’s esteemed panel of judges had to say about their experience:
Tim Marson highlighted the unique judging approach and standout categories: “Judging the entries by value and packaging as well as on quality gives this competition a unique angle. The overall quality of entries was high, but fewer standouts than in some years. The Cognac and Irish Whiskey flights were the highlights of the day.”
Jonathan Whitwell shared, “I liked the ability to chat with peers and the variety in spirits and brands. Interesting to see all the Indian whiskeys. I didn't realize there was so much decent stuff coming out of that region!” His remarks highlight the competition’s global appeal and its ability to introduce judges to exceptional spirits from unexpected regions.
For Teresa Dito, the competition is as much about camaraderie as it is about professional development. “Meeting new people and tasting spirits and judging them helps out with work in ordering spirits. It was very organized and fun to be a part of, my second year, and I’d love to be part of it again next year.”
Bruce Abbott, President of Liquor Stores USA
Bruce Abbott, President of Liquor Stores USA, found the competition to be a window into the innovative world of spirits: “Judging the competition is always a great way to be introduced to new and novel spirits. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of gin from South America.”
Michael Bowles (left) and Ankita Okate (right)
Michael Bowles noted the thoughtful process of judging and the global reach of the entries: “I had more time to consider each flight, and I like that we can't sneak any peeks at the bottles until we finish the submission. I love seeing gins and rums from Asia and lots more from new countries that are unexpected.”
Many judges, like Tamir Benshalom (in the picture on the left), appreciated the smooth logistics and the joy of discovery. “The organization of it all. Great hosts and staff, and my company at the table! Simple, smooth, and a pleasure as always. Southeast Asian rums were a pleasant surprise!”
Kimberly Morini praised the event's organization and impact: “It gave me insight into a lot of different brands in a variety of categories. I think the organizer is doing a splendid job, and the judging process is better than it’s ever been.”
From seasoned veterans like Jacopo Rosito, who observed that “each year is getting better and better,” to newcomers like Nat Harry, who valued the chance to “catch up on new products entering the market,” the USA Spirits Ratings competition continues to stand out as a hub for discovery, connection, and excellence.
Michael Cecconi appreciated the professional setup and camaraderie among judges: “The professional, blind tasting was a delight. I also enjoyed spending the day with my fellow professionals.” This sentiment underscores the competition's ability to foster both a rigorous evaluation process and a sense of community.
Jeff Feist (left) and Sid Patel (right)
Jeff Feist valued the comprehensive judging criteria and technological advancements: “Well organized, and judging all three components is a great way to review the overall product. The new web-based judging sheets are very good.” This highlights the competition's commitment to innovation and thorough evaluation.
Jamie Fernandes found inspiration for her craft: “I loved tasting all of the spirits and discovering new products to think about the cocktails I could make in the future. I think the system is solid and effective.” This shows how the competition not only evaluates spirits but also sparks creativity in its judges.
Aom Lee
Aom Lee appreciated the smooth logistics and the level of competition: “The competition was very well-organized, and clear communication and smooth logistics made the entire experience enjoyable. I appreciated the level of competition—it was challenging.”
Ranier Reglos noted the networking opportunities: “The ability to connect and meet people in the industry while discussing emerging brands and previewing new liquors to come” is a key aspect that adds value to the competition for industry professionals.
Chris Ward summed up his experience succinctly: “It was a really well-run program. Attention to detail was appreciated. Getting to try so many great brands in an analytical environment was so much fun.”
